Well, it was another fun Christmas season. We went to Chicago to visit Sylvia's parents...and her cousin Jaewoo, who's in the states a little while before heading to Toronto to study some English. Big props to Sylvia's sister Cecilia who hooked us up with a ton of baby clothes, and my sister Naomi who gave us the gift that keeps on giving.

Baby Choi update - the last time we saw the doctor (about three weeks ago), he was a little surprised that Sylvia hadn't felt the baby moving/kicking yet. So he says "I guarantee you will feel the baby before your next appointment" (Jan 7th). So about five days ago, Sylvia felt the baby moving around, kicking, punching, twisting. And try as I might, I was always a little too late to put my hand on the right spot. Shoot, even Sylvia's mom felt it before I did. But last night, after about 10hours of re-arranging our apartment...victory! Honestly, it felt like a little gas bubble, but it was amazing to know that my baby princess is somewhere inside, kicking the daylights out of mommy's uterus.

When I was a kid, I used to watch alot of hockey on the old SportsChannel, some playoffs on
USA network...Probably like a lot of other kids, my favorite team was the Oilers (even though I was only 30 minutes from Philly). Gretzky, Coffey, Messier, Kurri, Fuhr, Anderson, Lowe...August 9, 1988 was one of the worst days of my life...

Anyways, just had some good old flashbacks when I ran across this on YouTube. It's from the 2005-2006 playoff series against Anaheim, game 4. Inspirational...Most of the sporting events I've been to, people are too busy talking on their cell phones or mugging for camera time to notice the national anthem. So, enjoy this moment of northern pride.

Been sick for about three weeks now...sleeping way too much, lots of phlegm, all the good stuff. Anyhow, today was a decent day - didn't have to sleep, headaches went away, not much congestion. So hopefully, this will be the turn. Hopefully I didn't just jinx myself.

Earlier in the day, Sylvia and I went to the jungle. Got some flank steak, only 4.99 per lb. They also had some beautiful mahi mahi; but after we got home, we find out that it was on the list of fish that pregnant women should avoid.....So....
I had the mahi mahi topped with a herb-butter/white wine sauce; Sylvia had some chicken breast with the same sauce. Sides - spaghetti squash; steamed asparagus; steamed broccoli (sp?); sauteed red and green peppers....yummmm.

Went to the happiest place on earth earlier this morning, and I saw this beautiful English thing in the parking lot...Hand-crafted, perfect weight distribution, 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, and weighs only 1984 pounds (or a little less than three Hummer H2's). Pure. Automotive. Bliss.

So, a much needed break from work and studies is here at last. In-laws are driving down from Chicago tommorow (Thursday) morning, and we'll have a fun extended weekend together.
On the menu for tommorow night:
- spiral sliced ham with a brown-sugar glaze
- mashed potatoes
- roasted zucchini
- steamed aspragus
- roasted acorn squash, with turkey and fuji apple stuffing
- and whatever else I can think of between now and tommorow night

Ah...cooking is so relaxing, takes all the Ph.D stress away.

So this morning, Sylvia and I are sleeping, and there's a mysterious knock at the door. "What the..." is all I can think of, since few people actually knock on our door, and even fewer at 8am. When I finally got the door - surprise, surprise! - it was Sylvia's sister Cecilia, her husband Jae and our niece Evelyn! We had a great day spending time; should be even better when the in-laws show up.

So I'm a student at HUC...and there's been a rash of minor crime in the neighborhood around school (no worries; I'm only there during the day) - mostly theft and stuff like that, typical urban neighborhood business. Anyhow, the school got some extra security, and they have their patrol car out on the main campus drive to provide a "visible presence." Their car of choice? Just imagine a set of flashing lights on this bad boy:

So the Cubs signed Aramis Ramirez - 5 years, 75 million. Of course, they could have added a few years and bucks to his last deal, which he opted out of (10.5 million per year), but...Not a terrible price for 3B with power, although his defense is just so-so. The worrisome part is how he choked it last spring - pulled a .197/.321/.394 (for the uninformed, the last two numbers of the set are OBP and slugging) during April; .266/.296/.495 in May. Maybe he missed having some protection in the lineup.

The big news, though, is that the Cubs traded two minor leaguers for White Sox reliever Neal Cotts. So-so 2006; but a phenomenal 2005 - shifting to the NL should be good for a 1/2 run improvement on his ERA. But why is this the big news? History, my friend. Way back when in 1998, I was living in a 500 sq. ft. studio with a roommate(!), making a little above minimum wage, and the Cubs traded away a pitching prospect for a Sox reliever - Matt Karchner for Jon Garland. Karchner went 3-1, 28ip, 5.14 ERA for the rest of 98 and played in one game of the NLDS loss to Atlanta (2/3 of an inning, one hit, one run, one K). And so, for a glorious 60 2/3 innings, we gave up Jon Garland, who's won 76 games since 2002. Oh, and since you're wondering, total wins for Wood and Prior since 2002 - 80.

Baby Choi update. Had the 14 week check up last Monday. Everything is good. Mommy is doing fantabulously - no more barfing, no more nausea...now she gets to move into what the doctors called the "chowing down" phase. I don't think that is a real term...

Let's be realistic. I'm a Cubs fan. I've accepted the fact that they might make a playoff run every odd year, but they are what they are - a mediocre team that rakes in the cash from the Wrigley experience. I'm okay with the whole billy goat, Bartman, been-waiting-since-1908 deal. But why, tell me, do I have to put up with this?

so the last few days, i've wanted to take a break from reading, go out for a walk, maybe take some pictures of random things...long story short, whenever i have time to go, it's been dreary/rainy/cold. whenever i did not have time, it's been sunny and gorgeous. yup...

the other day, it was 45 and i was cold. when i lived in chicago, 45 was downright balmy. now, it means that i have to wear at least three layers. have i gotten soft? i mean, i survived when it was 21 below! now i can't stand the thought of 21 period. maybe it's just the age.

i don't know how many people know or don't know, heard or haven't. anyways, Sylvia is pregnant. That's right, my genes are about to wreak havoc on the world. as of tommorow (10/27), it'll be thirteen weeks. wow, i just realized that the first trimester is already over. we've got a couple of names in mind - more details to come later.

Mostly, it's about being together in Christ, and learning how to love God, each other and the world around us. We're not perfect, but we try our best, and help each other along.

So on Saturday, Sylvia and I were both stressed out of our minds. And then she remembered that she had no school on Monday...and I don't have classes on Monday. So instead of being responsible adults, we decided to drive down to Nashville for a long weekend....

We can sum up our experience in five words - "damn the food was good."

Stayed at the Doubletree Nashville. Amazing ribs at a place called Bar-B-Cutie. Yeah yeah, the name is hokey, but the ribs were good - hickory smoked, great spice rub, fall of the bones...mmmm. AND, they had these really good corn bread/fritter deals.

We knew Nashville was music city and all, but they even had live music at this ice cream place we went to.

Went to a place called...uh...I forget...but they had really good shrimp and grits. MMMM....

On Sunday, we hung out around Vanderbilt. Nice place.
Another amazing sight - we were sitting at a Borders, killing time before church (yes we went) and the cafe was literally filled with students studying -- at 9am on Sunday! Earlier that morning, this place saved my life.

And right before we came home, stopped by Loveless Cafe. Again, the food was damn good - fried chicken, fried green tomatoes, greens, hashbrown casserole...and had a really fun time talking it up with the pitmaster, who just happened to be putting the finishing touches on smoked pork loins as we were walking up. Everyone there was so nice - kept asking us if we ate yet or not - reminded me of my grandma. Apparently, it's Amy Grant's favorite place to eat. Don't know what that does for my life, but whatever...

I hate coming up with titles for stuff - papers, articles, blog postings, subjects for emails. I guess I ain't that creative.

Nothing much going on in the kingdom. A few friends from Lexington/Wilmore came up to visit last week. We went to CSO and saw an amazing performance of Piano Concerto for Left Hand in D Minor by Ravel. The pianist's name was Pierre-Laurent Aimard, and I have a serious man-crush on him.

My last semester of coursework at HUC starts in five days. It's quite a weird feeling; about four months from now, I will never have to sit through another lecture or do anymore homework. I'm taking a class on Ezekiel, a language class on Old Babylonian letters, and a readings course and Biblical Law and Legal Theory. I need a fourth class - gotta find one by Tuesday.

I've been doing alot of reading lately - a little over 2000 pages thus far in the month. Allow me to make some recommendations:

R. Whybray The Making of the Pentateuch - a nice review of various theories of the composition of the Pentateuch, with a good critique of the documentary hypothesis.

F. V. Greifenhagen - Egypt on the Pentateuch's Ideological Map - interesting method. Looks at the ideological elements behind the use of Egypt in the Pentateuch, and considers their origins.

W. Iser The Act of Reading - yes, a book about reading. Highly worth the read...

In the next few weeks, hoping to find some time for Stanley Fish Is There a Text in This Class?

And yes, I know, you don't need to remind me. I am a massive geek.

A busy few weeks...

No digital camera yet...so still no pictures to show. But, feel free to use your imaginations...

Finished up the semster at HUC - one more to go and it's on to exams and my dissertation. The topic is rounding out nicely...hope to have something very concrete (first few chapters?) by this time next year.

Sylvia and I spent Christmas in Miami, FL. The weather on Christmas day - 85, sunny...absolutely gorgeous. We spent some time at South Beach, and a few days in Key West. A really great time all around. The highlight of the trip? As usual for us, the food - oyster po boys, lobster cakes, oysters on the half shell, steaks, chorizo, parillada, pizza margherita, and hand-made Key West ice cream that also saved me from having a huge intenstinal catastrophe.

After Miami, it was off to Camp Wonderland in Wisconsin for the 180 Ministries Retreat. It was quite an experience to see the heart of our father being revealed.

We're in Chicago right now - stopped by here to visit the in-laws after the retreat, heading back to Cincinnati in the morning. I miss my bed. I miss my desk. I miss my Ichiro bobble-head who provides me with all of life's answers (almost always with a nod for yes). I miss pooping in my own toilet. I miss cooking (weird huh) and going to the jungle.

And so, while we've been paying almost $3/gallon for gas...(can you imagine working for minimum wage? A tank of gas would be an entire shift of pay....), and our airline infrastructure has been falling apart, Exxon and Shell are proud to report record profits - link. Shell had profits of 7.4 billion dollars; Exxon had 9.9 billion, in the last QUARTER! That's in three months! But poor Chevron, they only had an increase of 12% in the last quarter to 3.59 billion.
Here's what Shell's CFO had to say: "We are capturing the benefits of high oil and gas prices and refining margins" Chief Financial Officer Peter Voser. Reports that Exxon executives are using $100 bills to wipe their butts have not been confirmed yet.

What can be said...sometimes life in a capitalist society is great. Times like this, it comes, bites you in the ass, and makes you pay $50 to fill up your car. Yay capitalism...

Some bad news in the kingdom of Choi...
Our beloved digital camera suffered some critical injuries, and has gone to a far better place. Actually, it broke down due to an apparently quite common problem for Canon digital cameras (the point-and-shoots, not the dSLR's) - check this out for more info, if you are so inclined. Online, there were some home-made fix-it suggestions, but most of them amounted to "twist the lens around until it pops back into place..." Right...
And so, this is where we find ourselves in.

More bad news...the WhiteSox clinched the AL Central and home-field-advantage for the playoffs. When the Cubs got eliminated a few weeks ago, I dealt with it - too many injuries, shaky bullpen, Dusty losing the team, yada yada yada. But now that the Sox are in, especially after their oh-so-tantalizing, epic-proportion near collapse...well, this season has officially gone into the toilet. Ozzie Guillen might as well just kick me in the groin now.
The October page of my 2005 Cubs calendar has a picture of Kerry Wood. I think this may be the only way of seeing him pitch in October. Oh the bitter irony!

More bad news...still trying to get over the Bears' loss to the Bengals last Sunday. All of the pains of being a Bears fan, in one magnificent sentence - link.

Another weekend come and gone...for some reason, we seem to be getting less sleep during the weekends than the weekdays. Friday night, I slept a grand total of 3.5 hours...
So Saturday morning, me and the wife went to Jungle Jim's...got lots of delicious food.
Sylvia took a nap after we got back; I finished up a review paper on a quite interesting book: The Origin of Consciousness and the Breakdown of The Bicameral Mind - link. Here's a quick FAQ on the book.

So, in my last post, I celebrated the wonders that are my sisters and brothers-in-law, who, as memory will have it, sent me a beautiful gift. Well, days after I got the iPod mini, Apple decides that it will discontinue it, and start selling the iPodnano. Oh well - what's a boy to do - nothing, right? WRONG! My amazing brother-in-law, Yoon Lee, rides to the rescue, calls up Apple, gives them several pieces of his mind, and minutes later, they decide to right the wrong...and send me a new iPodnano...(should be here by next week).

Well...this weekend was full of activities and fun.
Friday - our totally awesome friends DG and Tiffany Hollums got us tickets for the Bengals game against the New England Patriots. Me, DG and Mike O from Asbury went to the game - the women hung out at Joseph Beth Books for a while. Despite Sylvia's great wishes, Tom Brady did not dress for the game...
